Learning How to Ask the Right Questions
May 21st, 2009
The boys say it’s easier to meet girls online. You have their instructions down from joining the most popular Internet dating sites to whipping up a winning profile. You’ve even attached a soft focus photo of yourself to go with it. With the online dating population at a 60-40 ratio of women to men, you’re just about ready to have the time of your life. The only thing you have to figure out is how to find the right girl. From the throng of women, how do you tell which one is Ms. Right? After all, it’s quality and not quantity that truly matters. You can get lost trying to find the right girl, especially since you can’t be too sure if your online date is who she says she is in her profile.

Getting the right answers comes from asking the right questions. Ask her what she thinks about online dating for starters. Be on the lookout for answers that come out as cynical, then follow through with, “Men couldn’t be that bad, what makes you think that way?” If you listen intently, she might share a bad experience with a former online date or an ex. It will get the ball rolling. You can then ask her opinion about the common blunders that men make both online and offline. That should tell you something about the kind of guys she likes.
As you warm up to each other, you can get more personal without being intrusive. Remember that it’s not what you say, but how you say it. Pop the question as if it just passed your mind, like “This sure is fun. How long have you been doing this (dating online)?” Ask her how different her online dating experience is from her past relationships, after which you may ask what made her call it quits with her ex. If you do, watch out if she rattles on about how much pain he’s caused her. It’s either she’s not over him yet or she’s got a negative outlook on guys. Whatever it is, it can’t be good for you.

Don’t get too caught up in asking the right questions that she might feel like she’s talking to the Feds. Show the real you, so she’d open up some more.
