Online Dating: How to Nurture the Relationship
May 21st, 2009
Online dating used to be just for fun, until you come across someone whom you think could be “the one.” What happens next? Being in an online dating relationship does not exempt you from the ups and downs that those in regular relationships go through. As in any other relationship, it takes a significant amount of time and effort to nurture online datingrelationships. In fact, the circumstances surrounding an online relationship make it even necessary for you to work twice as hard as other couples do. Let the following tips for online dating help you achieve a successful relationship.
1. Reality check
Before making that emotional investment, try to evaluate the status of your online dating relationship. There’s no point going through the rest of the steps unless you’re sure that this is the relationship you want to nurture and bring to another level. Does he or she pull a disappearing act online for unexplained periods of time? People with multiple online relationships usually do this, and you probably don’t want to be in too deep with someone like that.
2. Proper timing
Time is a key factor in successful online relationships. Spend too much time online, and you’d come across as lazy or obsessive. Spend too little time, and you’d appear inconsistent and uninterested. Set a regular schedule for your virtual date and make sure you stick to it. If something really important comes up, make sure you tell him or her that you can’t make it. No one likes to be stood up–especially someone who’s sitting down in front of a computer. In addition, a successful online relationship needs to have the right pace. Don’t rush him or her to meet up for real until he or she is ready. Don’t wait too long either.
3. A “real” feel
Successful online relationships aren’t restricted to what can be done online. Send him or her a copy of your favorite book, as this would have come up in your previous chats. Don’t send an e-book since online presence is already routine. Go old school and add a handwritten note or highlight insightful lines to give your gift more character. If you live in different countries and he or she has culinary interests (or if the previous one seems too cheesy for you), send your date a recipe book of your native dishes.
